Seek started life as a guitar loop at home in Auckland late 2009. I'd just moved up from Welly and life was kinda upside down. After who knows how long sitting round feeling sorry for myself, I started writing again. At the time I was obsessing over Black Milks purple tape. Obsessing in my OCD, play on loop till the sun comes up kind of way. One of those tracks was the inspiration for this song.
I chopped some drums, 16 level'd a rough bass line and doubled it in my guitar. On top of that was a rhodes sample that wasn’t really in tune. The idea needed a lotta work, but it meant I'd dug my way out of a hole and was doing something with my time. It meant something to me.
Essentially it was just a 4-bar loop when I took the concept to the boys during a writing session up the Kapiti Coast. Something about that trip had us collaborating and connecting in a way that made it feel safe to bring up ideas. I don’t really remember the band process and how it came together but with everyone else's input (these dudes are geniuses) it came out as an HCE tune.
Cue summer 2010, album recording at Paddy's place. Shaun played the original feel on his kit, which was chopped up into a handful of loops and filtered and layered via my mpc. Everyone else's bits were layered and looped over time into pro tools. Ned came and destroyed the vocals in one afternoon and the tune was done. Mixed, mastered and sitting on our drives doing nothing. Till now.
